Smashing Trash with Solar Power!

The BigBelly solar power compactor – the name alone makes one do a double take… And they seem to turn heads wherever they are installed too!

What is it?

A trash collector, about the size of a 35-gallon trash can, that can smash about 85 gallons worth of garbage – cutting down on the number of trips for trash collection as well as the amount of fuel used and the hours of employee-time spent collecting.

What’s special about it?

It’s powered by solar energy! The solar panels atop the compactors can store energy in a battery so that the sun is not continuously required for them to work!

Is a project undertaken by Waste Management of Orange County, California and it has turned out to be… well, a smashing success!

It is sustainable, reduces carbon emissions and reduces collection expenses to the customer as well!
