Eco-Friendly Solvents to Replace Toxic Acids..

As the world gears up for an impending green makeover, scientists have now turned their attention to all those harmful, carcinogenic, toxic acids and electrolytes used in many commercial metal finishing and energy storage processes.

And the result?

New solvent technologies that would see the development of safe, non-toxic, environmentally friendly solvents!

Who is responsible?

A team of academics, PhD students and Post Doc researchers from the University of Leicester’s Department of Chemistry.

More about the solvents…

These are ionic liquid solvents that could perform as well as or even better than the existing options. These liquids will replace unpleasant acids or caustic processes in the industrial working environment.

Future projects?

The team of researchers that we mentioned above has obtained funding to carry out the following three projects.

  1. POLYZION –             Create an environmentally friendly and affordable rechargeable battery for electric vehicles. The new technology will be sustainable, light-weight and cheaper.
  2. RECONIF – Use of environmentally sustainable ionic liquid solvents to extract metals form solid waste, instead of strong acids or caustic alkalis.
  3. ASPIS – Develop a new technology for surface treatment of circuit boards which are found in many electronic devices.
