New ‘Green’ IV Bags to Reduce Plastic Medical Waste

Hospira VisIV Green container made from multilayer plastic film

IV (Intravenous) equipment has been a key source of plastic medical waste in U.S. hospitals for several decades now. But not anymore!

Hospira, Inc.

Is a company in the U.S. that has developed a new form of green IV container that could do away with about 20 million pounds of plastic waste from U.S. hospitals annually!

The innovation?

VisIV “green IV” container made from a multilayer plastic film.

What’s special about is that…

This new IV container eliminates the disposable wrapper required to protect conventional IV containers from moisture.

These green IV containers have been around for a couple of years now and the company has just announced a new, even more sustainable tweak to this innovation!

This latest improvement to Hospira’s VisIV container uses a more recycling-friendly formula in its 50, 100, and 250 mL sized containers.

Also noteworthy is the fact that VisIV is made without the use of DEHP or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), plastics that have fallen into disfavor due to their deleterious nature with regard to the environment…
