“Volcano-shaped” Biomass Station: Reduce CO2 Emissions by 80%
Bigger and Bolder has got a new meaning with a power station to be built in a UK town that is shaped like a volcano! And the purpose of it? To provide green energy to an entire town!
The location?
Stockton-on-Tees in northeastern England.
The project?
A 279-foot-high (85-meter-high) volcano-shaped biomass station which will run on palm kernel shells (waste from palm-oil plantations in Malaysia).
What’s special about this project is that…
The plant’s entire operations (including fuel transportation from Malaysia) would reduce CO2 emissions by up to 80 percent as compared with running a coal-powered plant!
In addition to that…
- Waste shells would be delivered by ship to this riverside plant, reducing traffic on local roads
- Waste heat thrown off during electricity generation would be captured and used to heat nearby houses
All this will help convert this locality into a low-carbon community, a key objective of many green technology projects. The residents in the area have also been consulted extensively enabling healthy cooperation between all the stakeholders…
