Global Electric Car Standard to Popularize Electric Vehicles?
Anyone who has been following the growth of the electric vehicle sector knows about the parallel to the chicken or egg question in the industry.
What should come first? The zero-emission electric cars or the recharging stations? This has been a thorny issue for the manufacturers of such cars considering the very limited number of recharging stations available for electric vehicles.
A solution seems to have appeared on the horizon as four Japanese automotive giants and Japan’s largest power company reached an agreement over this issue.
CHAdeMO…
Is the name of the new group that was formed by the abovementioned parties. They include Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi Motors, Fuji Heavy and the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO).
The agreement?
A common system to recharge electric vehicles with the ultimate objective of creating a global standard!
Common complaints about electric cars?
- The expensive batteries
- Lack of recharging stations that are conveniently located
- The differences in type of outlet and voltage at recharging stations of different car makers
Standardization…
Has therefore been identified as a simple way of addressing part of this problem as this would require all car makers to adopt the same kind of outlet and voltage. This would enable any recharging station to serve a wide range of electric vehicles.
The move has drawn the government’s support…
In Japan and they have allocated 12.4 billion yen (13.7 million dollars) to develop a recharging grid.
On paper it seems like a difficult proposition to get all the key players around the globe to agree on a common method. In any case we will soon find out if Japan’s initiative is received well by the rest of the world as well…
