Which One is the Most Greenest Gaming Console ? (Xbox ? Wii ? or PlayStation ?)

Xbox 360 Wii PS-3

A study by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Ecos Consulting has revealed that our gaming consoles are consuming an estimated 16 billion kilowatt-hours per year. This amount of power is roughly equal to the annual electricity usege of the city of San Diego

Video game energy consumption

Throughout their study they have measured the power usage of the 3 latest gaming consoles offered by Microsoft (Xbox), Nintendo (Wii), and Sony (PlayStation).

Most popular gaming consoles

And the Result is ..?

From  all the gaming consoles that were taken into account, the Nintendo Wii have shown the minimum power utilization.

An Xbox or a Play station 3 left on 24/7/365 uses as much energy as two large refrigerators.

So the winner is

Nintendo Wii

Nintendo Wii

The Nintendo WII has been elected as the most energy-efficient gaming console in the market as it uses an average of just 16 watts when it’s in active mode. That is equal to one-seventh of power utilized by a Sony PlayStation 3 and one-ninth of power utilized by  a Microsoft Xbox 360 during game play.

What about the others..?

Microsoft Xbox 360:

Consumes an average of 119 watts when in Active mode.

Microsoft Xbox 360

Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3):

Consumes an average of 150 watts when in Active mode

Sony PlayStation 3

Important!

Sony PS3 is the gaming console that consumes the highest amount of power when compared with the other consoles in the market (in 2007).

In October 2008 Sony introduced a new power management feature via an online update, but that was also came disabled by default.

The Xbox does offer users abuilt-in auto power-down option, but the feature is disabled by default and buried deep in the system menu.

But…

Even though Xbox and PlayStation tend to consume too much power, both of them are capable of offering high-end 3-D graphics than a Nintendo Wii.  That means, now it’s up to the user to decide which one to choose.  Please let us know what you think?
