Sustainable Bamboo House for the European Solar Decathlon Competition
The European Solar Decathlon is a joint venture between the Ministry of Housing in Spain and the United States government. It is a sustainable solar architecture competition where universities from across the globe will take part by designing energetically sustainable houses that are powered by solar energy. The competition takes place in Madrid this year.
The design submitted by a Chinese team from Tongji University has got a lot of people talking and here we give you a quick rundown of its features accompanied by some images.
The Bamboo house…
Is what it’s called and it is also known as the Sunshine inn, perhaps indicative of the way in which it functions.
About the construction?
The house is mainly made out of bamboo (hence the name!) that is locally cultivated with a very short and efficient renewable cycle of five years. The design of the house minimizes production of CO2 during the construction phase significantly.
About the design?
As you can see in the images, the bamboo house features two curved roofs. These two roofs in addition to another solar-facing wall are attached with photovoltaic panels that produce sufficient energy to not only sustain the house but also potentially sell back to the grid.
The interior wall covering…
Uses phase change material to heat and cool the house in an energy-efficient manner.
