Remember all those times you wished you were back in school? Here’s a school that would make you yearn for it even more! Founded in 2008, The Green School in Bali, Indonesia is one of a kind. It’s a school that values being ‘green’ and is intent on producing future leaders that will go out of their way to protect the earth’s environment.

About the construction…

The school classrooms are open air and all the structures are built using bamboo, mud walls and alang-alang grass roofs. Even the parents and students are offered bamboo huts as accommodation to live on campus. A 42m bamboo bridge welcomes visitors to the Green School which is built on an 8 hectare land of padi terraces.

Ceiling fans in the classrooms are the only things that require electricity and bio-diesel is used for this purpose. Kitchen stoves use methane extracted from cow-dung, and compost from the toilets are used as fertiliser for the 90 odd types of vegetables in the school garden.

However they hope to switch to solar-power and micro-hydro power in the near future.

What do they teach?

It’s a school after all. The curriculum offers the regular subjects like Maths, English and Science but have also included Creative Arts subjects and Green studies which are quite unique. Older children are also offered the option of sitting for the Cambridge IGCSE’s and the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme eventually.

The school has 124 students from all over the world, and offers education from Kindergarten through to Grade 12. Enrolment fees ranges from US$ 5000- US$10000, with a scholarship programme available to the Balinese kids who take up 20% of the admissions.

About Green studies?

Green studies involve hands on education on ecology, environmental studies and principles of sustainability. Students are able to take up permaculture, animal science and even bamboo design technology.
