A ‘Green’ Necklace that Houses A Living Ecosystem!
The fashion industry caters to a variety of tastes in a variety of ways. A green conscience certainly has a role to play in many of these ‘fashion statements’ that are churned out these days. And Erica Weiner is one designer who has contributed to the industry through a vintage-inspired and exquisitely designed line of jewelry. Her latest idea for a necklace is no less inspiring!
A terrarium necklace?
A terrarium is a small enclosure that houses living plants or small animals. Erica Weiner, who has been designing these affordable jewelry rich in craftsmanship since 2005, has integrated this concept to her latest design, the terrarium necklace…. One that consists of a vintage watchmakers’ vial where a tiny specimen of moss is growing.
A living ecosystem?
This necklace, priced at US$ 40 is in fact a living, breathing ecosystem. And to keep it that way all you have to do is to place a drop of water inside the vial every 2-3 weeks and also to air it out occasionally.
The charcoal at the bottom of the vial keeps this ecosystem healthy and you also need to store the necklace in indirect sunlight for the system to continue to function in prime condition.
Nothing lasts forever!
Of course you didn’t need a tiny specimen of moss to tell you that! So when the plant growing inside the vial does someday die, you can just as easily replace it with a sample of moss you can find in your garden using tweezers.
About the construction…
All of Erica Weiner’s jewelry is handmade. The corked antique glass vials used to create these terrarium necklaces are about one to two inches in length while the vintage brass chain is 18 inches in length. The paper labels you see in the image have been made considerably water resistant. Be careful though, to not drop the vial. It’s made of glass after all.
