Reusable Tampons Made Out of Natural Sea Sponges!
So what’s the worst thing about being a girl? Apart from always having to wake up early to go to the bathroom, having to smell good, apply make-up, look flawless, remove every blooming evidence of hair from your body? Or maybe having to dress up so that you can impress your girlfriends, or being on the pill while trying not to get too chubby or maybe having to pop that kid out one day?
Or maybe…just maybe it might have something to do with that big red circle on your calendar that you could never seem to dodge and which unfailingly arrives at the worst possible time? Every time?
On average…
A woman goes through almost 500 monthly cycles during the menstruating years of her life, using up about 11,000 tampons or pads in the process! These tampons especially contain Dioxin, Rayon or synthetic fibers which obviously aren’t the most environmentally friendly substances around. Yet they end up in the environment anyway.
A solution…
Of sorts has been introduced to the market in the form of Sea Pearls ™, a natural sea sponge tampon!
Need more clarification?
Sea Pearls are naturally occurring sea sponges. Sponges are plant-like growing things on the ocean floor. There are many varieties that exist in nature but the Atlantic sponges used to make these tampons are one of the softest.
The proposed benefits include…
- Synthetic fibers are not used and therefore the risk of diseases like toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is eliminated
- Natural sea sponges are a sustainable source for tampons and the absence of synthetic material lessens the pressure on the environment
- Extremely soft and comfortable as their texture fits well with the contours of the vaginal wall
- Reusable! It has to be said that this definitely raised a few eye brows on our part but apparently these tampons can be reused for about 6 months and all you have to do between cycles is to wash the tampon with clean water.
A word of caution though…
Sea sponges are not sterile unlike regular tampons. And also the manufacturers recommend that you replace the tampon every three months in spite of its suggested 6 month ‘expiration date.’
